album "Allegories"

Allegories is a collection of nine metaphorical stories about believing in yourself, being true to yourself and following your dreams.

It was once described as “a collection of powerful and motivating songs…with lots of talking animals”. I find that really funny…it does have some talking animals!

All of these songs started acoustically, often with absentminded guitar playing and humming, which led to some repetition of melody. At that point I recorded some demo tracks and then started to build it out with all of the other instruments and layers.

A song-by-song breakdown:

1.        The Mouse & The Lion – tells of a weary and sad lion who’s feeling glum and has lost much of his courage and pride. A little mouse offers some emotional support and empathy and to the lion’s surprise, a whole host of animals gather to offer their support also. This act of kindness and bravery warms the lion, who feeds off their positivity. Feeling better within himself thanks to his little friends, the lion regains his strength and pride and lets out a huge roar. The closing line emphasises the message of this song “even the strong need a friend to lean on”.

2.        The Ballad of Life & Death – tells of a hooded figure entering a village during a night-time storm. He represents death and most folks bolt their shutters, keep deathly still and hide away hoping not to draw his attention. However, one house has it's lights on, it's chimney smoking and a waft a freshly cooked food teasing on the air. The Figure, Death, walks towards the house and is welcomed with warmth and kindness by a happy woman who opens her door and invites him in out of the cold and rain. She represents life. They form a harmonious relationship depicting the intricately woven balance of life and death.

3.        The Wolf Cried Out – is about a wolf who has been brought up since birth amongst a flock of sheep. It has started to feel out of place and as though it belongs elsewhere and has an urge to break free of its environment in order to realise its true purpose and its true life. This speaks to anyone who wants to make changes in their lives to better suit their core being.

4.        Believe – tells of a person who sails off over the ocean in search of adventure, on a homemade raft. Much to the scorn and admonishment of his friends and peers. It is about believing in yourself and following your dreams, and paying little attention to those who tell you that you can't achieve things.

5.        Golden Canary – uses the metaphor of a caged canary, which were often used as oxygen level barometers deep in mineshafts - when the canary stopped singing and died, oxygen levels were too low, and miners would leave the mine. It points to those who shout and sing about all they want to do but never actually do it. By default, they choose captivity over freedom.

6.        Memories Remain – is about holding onto positive memories of loved ones once they have passed. Life does not last for ever, but your memories can last as long as you do and can be shared and passed to others, for generations.

7.        Rise From Your Slumber – was written after reading a headline about millions of cicadas all ‘hatching’ on the same day after lying dormant for 18 years. It is a metaphor for finding your inner strength, being resilient and living your true life at a time that suits you.

8.        Let It Heal You – uses a tethered and caged dragon who finds the inner strength to break free of its shackles and soar majestically into the skies, realising both its own freedom and also its own true power; as a metaphor for our own lives. It is about finding your inner strength and realising your true potential.

9.        Time Rolls On – uses the metaphor of the passing of seasons beneath an active volcano. Once it erupts, all is lost and in need of being rebuilt. It signifies the constant cycle of life.
